Pantone’s 2015 Color of the Year : Marsala Color Inspiration

It’s that time of year again!  Pantone has announced the 2015 Color of the Year and we are loving their unique selection… Marsala! This rich wine hue will be gorgeous in wedding color palettes this next year.  We even have a few brides who are incorporating pops of this color into their peach and blush bouquets… it will be stunning and we cannot wait!

Here are some fun palette combinations suggested by Pantone :

Meet Our Fall Interns!

We recently completed our application process for our fall internship positions and we had such a great time getting to know some of the aspiring event planners in Kansas City! We are thrilled to have a great group of girls assisting us and learning alongside us this coming season. We thought you’d enjoy getting to know about them as well!  Let’s meet Loree, Katelyn and Evan!

This internship provides the possibility to look into one of the two and then develop my professional experiences.

What are you most excited about for this season? I’m excited to see how the process of planning events happens and learning how to produce quality events. I also think that brides and grooms are implementing their own personalities in their events, which will be exciting to see.

Meet Our Couples : Andrew and Catherine

Today we are thrilled to introduce you to one of our wonderful September couples, Andrew Lewis and Catherine Pogson! They are so sweet and we are really excited to work with them on their beautiful celebration next month!

Soirée : Where do you live?

A + C : Andrew and I are living with our families in Kansas City until our wedding in September. Andrew finished his degree in May, and I just completed mine at the end of July. We are still in study mode, as we both are in the middle of taking our board exams. After our honeymoon, we are moving to St. Louis. Andrew will begin his career at Deloitte, and I hope to work in the NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) at St. Louis Children’s Hospital. We are excited for this adventure together in a new city!

Soirée : How did you meet?

A+C : Andrew’s family moved from Denver the summer before his senior year. We met in physics at Pembroke Hill, and he and his friends faithfully came to my volleyball games. I admired him from afar, but assumed he was out of my league since he was one year older than me! Little did I know he also had a crush on me. For the next few years, we remained friends and did not pursue each other until the timing was right. We started dating after my freshman year of college (his sophomore year). We dated long distance for three years, which strengthened our relationship so much. I went to Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, NC, and Andrew went to University of Missouri (Mizzou) in Columbia, MO. As soon as I graduated in May 2013, I moved to Columbia to be with Andrew and to begin the Accelerated Nursing Program at Mizzou. We have cherished being able to see each other every day this past year!

Soirée : Tell us about your proposal?

A+C : Our proposal was simple and low key, which was exactly what I wanted! I flew home to spend Valentine’s Day weekend (2013) with Andrew. Since it had fallen on a weekday the past couple of years, this was our first Valentine’s Day together. We enjoyed a nice dinner at Houston’s on the Plaza, and Andrew proposed right after. It completely caught me off guard, especially since he assured me that he would never propose on a holiday. In my mind, I had eliminated Valentine’s Day as an option! He picked out the ring on his own, which was called the “Beethoven ring.” I don’t think it’s a coincidence that the last song I listened to on my flight home that Friday night was Beethoven’s No. 1 Symphony (I am a music nerd)!

Soirée : Describe your wedding vision

A+C : Seasonal, elegant, and original.

Soirée : What are you most looking forward to on your wedding day?

A+C : Andrew and I are waiting to see each other, so we are most looking forward to seeing each other at the end of the aisle!

Soirée : Why did you choose to hire a wedding coordinator?

A+C : Since we have had a long engagement (over one year and a half), we have certainly had sufficient time to plan our wedding! We were attracted to the idea of planning the majority of the wedding on our own, yet wanted some extra assistance with all of the last minute details leading up to our wedding. The “month of” wedding coordinator package seemed like the perfect fit for us. Although we have not “officially” begun working with Lynsey, she has graciously answered all of our questions and has given us wonderful suggestions over the past year. We are so grateful that Lynsey will be able to tie all our loose ends during August and September!

Soirée : Do you have any words of wisdom for couples going through the planning process?

A+C : Savor this special time, focus on each other and try not to fret over the little details. Take the planning process one step (or vendor) at a time, instead of looking at your to-do list as whole. Everything will iron itself out!

Soirée : Anything else you’d like to share with your readers?

A+C : Talk about your wedding vision together, so that it reflects you as a couple (not just the bride)! As far as planning goes, discuss and honor each other’s top priorities. Andrew asked that his cousin bless our marriage, and I asked that my former cello teacher and her husband perform during our ceremony. It’s great to be able to incorporate both of our wishes into the service!

We love their outlook on this special time! Congratulations on your upcoming nuptials, Andrew and Catherine. We are looking forward to serving you in this final month!

Modern Indian Bridal Inspiration Shoot

With interest in honoring tradition while expressing modern taste, we wanted to showcase the perfect juxtaposition of Indian bridal elegance paired with a contemporary black and white palette. The importance of bright color in the attire and accessories was able to stand out against floral arrangements and garlands composed of of whites and creams. The beautiful Amigoni Winery located in the heart of Kansas City served as a beautiful slate for this vision to come to life.

Kansas City Vendor Spotlight : Anecdotally Yours

One of the greatest parts of our job in creating a beautiful wedding day for our couples is getting to team up with other awesome Kansas City vendors that serve our couples so well!

Today, we’re sitting down with the husband and wife photography/videography team behind Anecdotally Yours, Jeff and Erica Short.  Their images are gorgeous and their sweet hearts shine through everything they do!  Let’s learn more, shall we?

This image is actually one of our sweet Soirée Event Designs couples in 2013!

Name: Anecdotally Yours, Jeff and Erica Short

Years in business: Photography beginning in 2007 and Videography beginning in 2010.

How did you get started in your business? Photography was a hobby of mine (Erica’s) and in college I became serious about it. I started shooting weddings right as I was graduating from K-State and quickly realized that this is what I wanted to do for a career! A few years later, we saw a need for creative, real-to-life wedding filmmaking. And we wanted to work full-time together, because we really like each other. 🙂  So, Jeff jumped in head first and learned the art of shooting video and we became a photo/video team! We rebranded two years ago to Anecdotally Yours, out of a desire for our brand to reflect our focus on storytelling. Now, we both do photography and videography work and have a great little team of people who shoot with us!

saddle-and-sirloin-wedding66 saddle-and-sirloin-wedding19 overland-park-wedding61

What does the process look like for clients who work with you? It looks a lot like getting to know new friends.  It’s a lot of fun. We love to know our couples well before their wedding day (Skype is our best friend for couples who can’t come by the studio!). We never want to feel like strangers, since we’re there ALL day on a wedding day, and it’s important that we know the things that will be meaningful to our couples and their families. Since we don’t script, direct, or pose anything in our photos or films (well, except for the group photo part of the day!), we have to be able to anticipate emotions, reactions, and movement. That works best when we can spend time getting to know a bride and groom, and hearing about their families. We listen just as much as we watch on a wedding day. Even with photography, which changed quite a bit once we started refining our approach to filmmaking – the way we shoot photos now reflects a desire to tell the whole story, to isolate in one frame a bigger narrative. And we love shooting wedding films, creating a rich, intentional story that has depth through the visuals and the audio that we weave throughout.

We’re also all about making things simple and easy, since we want brides and grooms to stay focused on what matters.  We firmly believe that the day is not about the photography or videography – it’s about the things that naturally happen throughout the day that make for great photos or video. Nothing fake here!

Describe your favorite wedding style:  It’s kind of impossible to have a favorite. We have such an eclectic group of couples that we work with each year, so I guess our favorite style is one that is completely suited to the couple — a wedding planned with attention to personalized detail (family heirlooms, creative ways of tying interests into the day, etc.). We love indoor weddings, outdoor weddings, farm weddings, rooftop weddings, all of them… as long as the style was chosen because it just “fits” with who the couple is. Those are the BEST.

Favorite season of the year and why? We love fall. We got married in the fall, and love everything that comes with that time of year. It just feels especially cozy.

Favorite reception cocktail? Again with the personalization… but we love signature cocktails that include favorite flavors of the bride and groom, or that have significance to their heritage, interests, places traveled, etc.

crestview-country-club-wedding30 club-1000-wedding94

Quote you live by: Jeff wanted me to retrieve my old site, where I used to share inspirational quotes and Swedish proverbs all the time. Rather than revisiting that embarrassing era of life, I’ll just spare you. 🙂

Favorite part of a wedding? Ceremony or reception? So hard to choose! We love the commitment and vows spoken in a wedding ceremony, but we also love watching people let loose and enjoy the best party of their lives with the people closest to them. We’re that kind of couple, though – we love sentimental things and also a great party.

Vendors such as Anecdotally Yours make our job so much fun and make our brides so happy!  To see more of their work, visit their blog at Thank you so much to Jeff and Erica for partaking in our vendor feature and sharing the story behind your business!
