Wedding on the Roof Top : Kenn + Mariann

Kenn and Mariann were such a joy to work with. More than anything they wanted a small intimate celebration with their closest friends and family while enjoying one of their favorite local spots, Mestizo in Park Place. We were thrilled to assist them as one of our Month-Of Coordination clients, helping them tie up the lose ends in their planning and helping to execute on that special day.

Crazy for Cakes!

Wedding cakes can be a couple’s favorite part of planning. Cakes are often a focal point at the reception and can sometimes be the guest’s favorite part! Textured cakes, floral details, cake toppers and ribbon borders…. whatever you choose can add the perfect dose of personality to your event.  Today we’re exploring some fun and unique ideas for a decorated wedding cake that we think you’ll enjoy!

A single tier can be just as beautiful as a large extravagant design! Metallics are growing in popularity and sugar flowers are always a good idea!  Image via.

Stucco texture is a perfect fit for weddings that have a slight rustic feel.  Blooms placed among the tiers can add a special touch and a pop of color. Via Style Me Pretty.

Texture can also be obtained with a sugar flower covering like this cake above!  A ribbon adds a classic and sophisticated touch. Image via.

This lightly dusted blue two tier cake has minimal detail with the braided bottom and off centered hydrangea flower on top.  It is just the right about of decoration to fit with the theme of the event without going overboard!

This gold and turquoise combination is accented nicely with pattern and border detail.  It is fun to carry the details of your invitations or table linens into the design of your cake! Image via.

Who said wedding cakes had to be a traditional shape? This sphere base is totally eye catching and would certainly make a statement on your display table! Via Wedding Me You.

This cake has a simple base but an extravagant icy wonderland detail! Great for a wintertime wedding. Via Colin Cowie Weddings.

This cake displays a whole lot of personality and doesn’t look like your traditional wedding cake. Via Love Wed Bliss

Needless to say, the possibilities are endless when it comes to the cake.  Explore your options, have fun with it…and make sure it tastes delicious for all of your guests to enjoy. Do you have a favorite of the cakes we’ve featured today? Do share in the comments below!

Vendor Feature : Be Chic Bride

One of the coolest parts of our job?  Connecting with other fabulous wedding vendors in Kansas City! There is nothing more fun than having a client fall in love with a vendor that you have suggested for them and we are so lucky to work with some of Kansas City’s best.  Mikayla and Breanna of Be Chic Bride are one of our very talented hair and makeup artists that focus specifically on brides and bridal parties!

Let’s get to know them, shall we?

Screen Shot 2014-06-20 at 3.09.41 PM Screen Shot 2014-06-20 at 3.09.20 PM

Soirée : How many years have you been in business and how did you get started?

Be Chic Bride : We have been in business for 7 years. Growing up in a family of all girls, we’ve always had plenty of “models” to practice hair and makeup on. But after having worked for a few years for another business in this same field, we felt it was time for us to make it our own. We started BeChic with the idea of truly letting the bride be pampered on her wedding day. We want our brides to not have to worry about going to a salon, late appointments before them, traffic, getting a stylist who maybe doesn’t do wedding hair or makeup every day, being apart from your bridal party while you are getting all glammed up, etc.  Our passion in the beauty industry is specific to weddings. We LOVE them! We love everything about them.  (Truth be told, I’m pretty sure we have about 5 “vow renewal” ceremonies planned on Pinterest. Now if we can only talk our husbands into spending a few hundred thousand dollars…)

Our team of hand-picked stylists do all of our trainings throughout the year on hair and makeup education that specifically relates to anything a bride might need for her wedding day look. Plainly said, we know what works, what lasts and what’s gonna make that camera love every angle of you! After all, a bride spends a good portion of her budget on photography and videography (and that GORGEOUS frock!), so why wouldn’t you want to “complete the package” with professional hair and makeup??

Screen Shot 2014-06-20 at 3.11.54 PM

Soirée : What does the process look like for brides that work with you?

Be Chic Bride : Where it really all begins for each bride with us is their trial run. We want to hear all about her wedding. What she has envisioned for her wedding day look since she was 5, what the flowers are going to be, the colors, the DRESS, how she and her Mr. met, what unique touches they will have to their day that maybe only the two of them will understand, the list goes on and on.

This is the bride’s opportunity to really find out what flawless look compliments everything about them, their style and will inevitably knock their groom’s socks off! We do find sometimes that a bride will come in with certain pictures that are on all ends of the “spectrum”, if you will. She gets to try them all out and see what looks best on her. And more often than not, a bride will end up choosing a look she didn’t think she would.

After a bride’s trial, if she chooses to book with us, we go over the contract and specifics for her big day. From then on, we make sure we are available to whatever she may need before her wedding day.

When the amazing day is finally here, we are always on time to wherever the bride has decided that everyone is getting ready. This is the fun part! We get to meet all her best friends, sisters, mom(s) and sometimes (if we’re lucky) we even get to meet the Mr.!

Screen Shot 2014-06-20 at 3.15.03 PM

Soirée : Describe your favorite wedding style.

Be Chic Bride :

Mikayla: Oh gosh. While we’re sisters and a lot of our style ends up being very similar, I would have to say that I am a hopeless romantic. So something very traditional with lots of shabby chic florals and definitely some braids goin’ on somewhere. (Although, my own wedding was 1940’s old Hollywood complete with white dinner jackets, bowties, red-carpet, period-inspired bridesmaids gowns and some good ‘ole Frank Sinatra. I do LOVE a red lip!)

Breanna: Wedding styles are always changing and it is so fun to get to see when a bride jumps out of the “Midwest box” and does something modern. I love a runway-style gown with lots of sleek, artistic lines. The loft setting for a ceremony or reception has to be my favorite.  (But if Ikea ever starts doing weddings, I’m TOTALLY there!)

Soirée : Favorite Reception Cocktail?

Be Chic Bride : Hmm…. This is a hard one. We don’t usually stay for the wedding ceremony or reception so we don’t typically get to try the “signature drink”.  Something very sweet though. We both have a BAD sweet tooth!

Screen Shot 2014-06-20 at 3.12.31 PM

Soirée : What is your favorite part of a wedding?

Be Chic Bride :  Ahhh! SO MANY!!!

The part where Dad looks at his little girl all dressed and ready to begin a new family and realizes she’s all grown up and ready to be someone’s wife.

When the groom sees his bride for the first time coming toward him ready to give him her everything.

A mom gushing about how much she loves her new son-in-law and how she is so blessed that her daughter found a wonderful man, and how she can’t wait to see them grow together.

Soirée : What is a quote you live by?

Be Chic Bride :  It’s hard to pick even just a couple! 1)   Love the Lord your God with all your Heart, Soul and Mind. 2)   “Never promise more than you can deliver. But always deliver more than you promised”- Lou Holtz

Thank you so much Mikayla and Breanna for letting us gush on you for our readers! We love y’all!

Kansas City Wedding at the Midland : Chelsea and Andrew

A wedding day can be very bittersweet for a wedding planner.  On Chelsea and Andrew’s wedding day I was thrilled that they were beginning this next chapter of their lives together, but I was also so sad that it meant the conclusion of my time serving them!

Their February wedding brought beautiful sunshine and an incredible party!  Freeland Photography captured each moment so beautifully as you will see in the photos below.  Chelsea and Andrew Karle, thank you for letting me play a small part in this wonderful day! – Madi Sanders

Modern Indian Bridal Inspiration Shoot

With interest in honoring tradition while expressing modern taste, we wanted to showcase the perfect juxtaposition of Indian bridal elegance paired with a contemporary black and white palette. The importance of bright color in the attire and accessories was able to stand out against floral arrangements and garlands composed of of whites and creams. The beautiful Amigoni Winery located in the heart of Kansas City served as a beautiful slate for this vision to come to life.

Meet Our Couple : Jenna + Aaron

Each couple has an incredible story that is unique to them. Through our many conversations getting to know each of our couples, we are able to help them create a wedding that is also unique to them. We are excited to begin a new blog series featuring some of our wonderful clients.  Grab a cup of coffee (or glass of wine) and join us as we share a bit about our October bride and groom, Jenna + Aaron.

2014-03-17_0015How did you meet?

From J+A : It’s hard to imagine now, but there was a time before Aaron had a Twitter account. It was long before the word ‘selfie’ became part of our cultural lexicon; before Instagram; before the second-gen iPhone was even a thing. It was a time when Tumblr was still a cool blogging platform for twentysomthings — in an era where ‘cool’ and ‘blogging platform’ belonged in the same sentence.

It was 2007, and Aaron and Jenna each had a blog on Tumblr. They were avid readers of each others’ writing (we’ll use ‘writing’ loosely) and gleefully left snarky comments for one another. She thought he was cute; he thought she was the most hilarious and charming person on the whole wide Internet. Then they started emailing. Emails turned to instant messages. IMs turned to texts and phone calls. In 2008, they met in person and nobody turned out to be a serial killer.

One year and many LGA > KCI flights later, Jenna moved from NYC to Kansas City to live in Aaron’s loft.

Soon, they got a cat. And now they’re getting married.

Where do you live?

From J+A: Dallas, TX2014-03-17_00142014-03-17_0037Why did you decide to plan your wedding in KC?

From J+A: Four years of our relationship unfolded in KC; it’s where we starting building our life together. We have memories around every corner, and we’ve always wanted to showcase the city for our non-KC friends and family. Also, Aaron likes the beer and Jenna likes the cookies.

Tell us about your proposal.

From J+A: The long version is here. The short version: Jenna works for Pizza Hut’s corporate headquarters, so Aaron worked with her colleagues to stage a seemingly-routine product taste test in the middle of the workday. After a couple slices of pizza, Jenna was served a ring on a paper plate and Aaron came out of the kitchen and got down on one knee.2014-03-17_00022014-03-17_0003Describe your wedding vision in three words.

From J+A: Modern, glam, ours.

What are you most looking forward to on your wedding day?

From J+A: Jenna: Seeing each other for the first time from opposite ends of the aisle. (And cake.) Aaron: Celebrating with the people who mean so much to us and also the cake.2014-03-17_0019 2014-03-17_0018Why did you choose to hire a wedding planner?

From J+A: The obvious: Since we’re planning a KC wedding from Dallas, we needed someone on the ground to help us execute our vision, wrangle the budget, meet with vendors, etc. The not-so-obvious: neither of us quite have the right personality for wedding planning. Jenna is a detail-obsessed, disorganized second-guesser, Aaron is a quick decision-maker who trusts that things will take care of themselves. That’s a winning combination in life, but not during the stressful planning process. Madi has helped us navigate the biggest decisions together, and she moonlights as our bridal therapist.

Do you have any words of wisdom for other couples going through the planning process?

From J+A: Stop and get excited. You’re getting married. It’s the coolest. Beyond that: You do you. Our wedding isn’t trendy or full of DIY, shabby-chic details. It’s also not an ultra-elegant ballroom wedding. It’s our own pretty custom frankenbaby. It’s easy to second-guess your ideas when you see a million different things on blogs or in photos; remember to stay true to what you’d always envisioned and forget the Pins. 2014-03-17_0023Anything else you’d like to share with our readers?

From J+A: Be patient. Don’t make hasty decisions about your venue, your dress, your photographer, your guest list or your anything because you think you need to get it done right away. You’ve got time. And when you’re running out of time, your planner will let you know. Nicely.2014-03-17_0035

Really, how lucky are we to get to work with Jenna and Aaron as they plan their special day?  We are really looking forward to helping their vision come to life to allow them to soak in every moment and celebrate their life together.

Until next time,

Soirée Event Designs

Kansas City Vendor Spotlight : Anecdotally Yours

One of the greatest parts of our job in creating a beautiful wedding day for our couples is getting to team up with other awesome Kansas City vendors that serve our couples so well!

Today, we’re sitting down with the husband and wife photography/videography team behind Anecdotally Yours, Jeff and Erica Short.  Their images are gorgeous and their sweet hearts shine through everything they do!  Let’s learn more, shall we?

This image is actually one of our sweet Soirée Event Designs couples in 2013!

Name: Anecdotally Yours, Jeff and Erica Short

Years in business: Photography beginning in 2007 and Videography beginning in 2010.

How did you get started in your business? Photography was a hobby of mine (Erica’s) and in college I became serious about it. I started shooting weddings right as I was graduating from K-State and quickly realized that this is what I wanted to do for a career! A few years later, we saw a need for creative, real-to-life wedding filmmaking. And we wanted to work full-time together, because we really like each other. 🙂  So, Jeff jumped in head first and learned the art of shooting video and we became a photo/video team! We rebranded two years ago to Anecdotally Yours, out of a desire for our brand to reflect our focus on storytelling. Now, we both do photography and videography work and have a great little team of people who shoot with us!

saddle-and-sirloin-wedding66 saddle-and-sirloin-wedding19 overland-park-wedding61

What does the process look like for clients who work with you? It looks a lot like getting to know new friends.  It’s a lot of fun. We love to know our couples well before their wedding day (Skype is our best friend for couples who can’t come by the studio!). We never want to feel like strangers, since we’re there ALL day on a wedding day, and it’s important that we know the things that will be meaningful to our couples and their families. Since we don’t script, direct, or pose anything in our photos or films (well, except for the group photo part of the day!), we have to be able to anticipate emotions, reactions, and movement. That works best when we can spend time getting to know a bride and groom, and hearing about their families. We listen just as much as we watch on a wedding day. Even with photography, which changed quite a bit once we started refining our approach to filmmaking – the way we shoot photos now reflects a desire to tell the whole story, to isolate in one frame a bigger narrative. And we love shooting wedding films, creating a rich, intentional story that has depth through the visuals and the audio that we weave throughout.

We’re also all about making things simple and easy, since we want brides and grooms to stay focused on what matters.  We firmly believe that the day is not about the photography or videography – it’s about the things that naturally happen throughout the day that make for great photos or video. Nothing fake here!

Describe your favorite wedding style:  It’s kind of impossible to have a favorite. We have such an eclectic group of couples that we work with each year, so I guess our favorite style is one that is completely suited to the couple — a wedding planned with attention to personalized detail (family heirlooms, creative ways of tying interests into the day, etc.). We love indoor weddings, outdoor weddings, farm weddings, rooftop weddings, all of them… as long as the style was chosen because it just “fits” with who the couple is. Those are the BEST.

Favorite season of the year and why? We love fall. We got married in the fall, and love everything that comes with that time of year. It just feels especially cozy.

Favorite reception cocktail? Again with the personalization… but we love signature cocktails that include favorite flavors of the bride and groom, or that have significance to their heritage, interests, places traveled, etc.

crestview-country-club-wedding30 club-1000-wedding94

Quote you live by: Jeff wanted me to retrieve my old site, where I used to share inspirational quotes and Swedish proverbs all the time. Rather than revisiting that embarrassing era of life, I’ll just spare you. 🙂

Favorite part of a wedding? Ceremony or reception? So hard to choose! We love the commitment and vows spoken in a wedding ceremony, but we also love watching people let loose and enjoy the best party of their lives with the people closest to them. We’re that kind of couple, though – we love sentimental things and also a great party.

Vendors such as Anecdotally Yours make our job so much fun and make our brides so happy!  To see more of their work, visit their blog at Thank you so much to Jeff and Erica for partaking in our vendor feature and sharing the story behind your business!
